About me
I worked in the recreational boating and marina industry for about 30 years. I took a brief hiatus to work in city government and another stint in marketing, but I always went back to boats. Then I was working with a personal trainer and mentioned I wished I had done something fitness-related as a career. He asked why wouldn’t I just start now. That’s all I needed to hear.
I have been a regular exerciser since I was 16. I’ve always found fitness fascinating and enjoyed it as a daily escape. As a personal trainer, I like to think that I’m helping to mold bodies into better moving machines that expand what’s possible. I’ve seen people stop visiting friends because they can’t do stairs, skip a tour because there was a hill they couldn’t climb, and not snuggle a grandchild because they couldn’t pick him up. There’s nothing I like more than preventing or working towards reversing those outcomes. I hope to help clients find confidence in their ability to do things they thought they couldn’t.
My ideal client is someone who might not be enthused to workout but recognizes that showing up is half the battle. And once they’ve made it in the door, they might as well keep going! My clients usually find that they actually like working out because they feel better both in body and mind.
Specialties
Endurance and strength training, injury prevention, and confidence building.
Philosophy
Use it or lose it. Aging is no joke and every muscle you don’t put to work regularly will quickly decide it’s not up to the task. Training to me is not about beach bodies, but about giving you the ability to stay in the game, whatever that game may be.
I thrive on change—from changing jobs multiple times, to living in 8 different states, to regularly rearranging my furniture. What always keeps me grounded is a regular workout. When I left home for the first time to go to college, my dad told me to keep up my workouts. I didn’t get the advice at the time, but I’ve learned that when all else goes crazy, keeping a routine that’s also good for you will keep you sane.
Personal training is the best self-care you can do. It’s an hour of time that’s all about you, you vs you and you celebrating each win.
Outside the gym
I’m an East Coast native and moved to Oregon 12 years ago. I live in the Pearl District in NW Portland with my husband and two dogs. I’ve worked from home for 20 years so when I’m not working I like to leave the house—day hikes, kayaking, and traveling—whether that be a weekend in Coos Bay, a week to see family on the East Coast, or two weeks in another country.
