Kelly is a dream client! She always puts in the work and has been successfully chipping away at her goals. She started small but has added to her goals gradually over the last 15 months using small steps for big success. Kelly started with gym workouts twice a week and a little work on her off days – she now consistently puts in time outside the gym running, hiking and squeezing in gym workouts at her office. She is so committed and it’s been a joy to watch her get strong.
Name: Kelly Knivila
Age: 54
Length of time with Hyatt Training and date when you started: One year, I started in January 2017
What were your goals when you started? My big picture goal was to jump start a life-long commitment to exercise. I didn’t want to become like my mother and experience a decline in my ability to move and enjoy life as I approach my more senior years. I was already seeing some health impacts from my sedentary, stressful, lifestyle and I wanted to change that.
What are your goals today? Develop a more consistent exercise routine outside of my training sessions that includes running at least twice a week. I would love to run a 5K this year. I literally dream of being able to do full push-ups with ease.
What has been your biggest challenge? Aside from every exercise that Whitney has me do? Ha! Was there anything you had to overcome? I’ve had to overcome some fear of trying certain things. Fear that I couldn’t do it and would hurt myself. I had a lot more “I don’t think I can do that” moments in the beginning but Whitney has pushed me to try and I have often proven myself wrong. 😊 That has built my confidence.
What have been your biggest areas of improvement? Inches lost in many areas. But after that, the most noticeable would be the improvement in my arm strength. And I can run for 30-45 minutes without thinking I’m going to die.
What is your favorite thing about Hyatt Training? It’s a great, supportive atmosphere with people of all fitness levels. No judgment.
What is your favorite thing about your personal trainer? Whitney is patient with me and encouraging. She shares about her own journey to fitness and what works for her.
What is your proudest achievement or biggest accomplishment since you began working with Hyatt Training: Showing up consistently all year. Since college, it’s really the only time in my adult life that I’ve been consistently engaged in an exercise program.
What have you learned? That I have to be in it for the long haul or I won’t stay motivated. Viewing this as a lifestyle change that I am making forever so that I can have a rich life instead of something I am doing to achieve a certain weight has been a game changer. Last year I applied that mindset shift to exercise and it worked. This year I’m adding in healthy eating.
What advice would you give to other people starting on their fitness journey? Just make one small change and stick with it. Then add something after that and stick with it until it is part of your routine.
