Having active hobbies is one of the major components of a long and healthy life. Check out the advice from personal trainer Erin Seekins for sticking to your workouts and goals by way of, well, fun!

“Research tells us that those with clear, concise and and specific goals are the most successful in the gym. Goals not only help keep you motivated but also give your training an “unique-to-you” focus. If you have goals that you’ve already achieved and are looking for the next thing, or don’t really know what kind of goals to set beyond “be healthier”, one of the best things to do is set activity specific goals, so while you’re in the gym, you’re working towards something you love to or want to do.

Research also tells us that people with hobbies that have an active and social component live longer and more fulfilling lives, and are also at lower risk for diseases like Alzheimer’s. Hobbies can be anything from hiking, running, swimming, yoga, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, rock climbing, or anything that peaks your interest that involves being up and active! Focusing on an activity or sport-specific goal will keep you interested and motivated even when other goals fall by the wayside.” —Erin Seekins

Erin’s personal training philosophy

Portland personal trainer Erin SeekinsMy training philosophy is simplicity. One of the main reasons people have a hard time maintaining an active lifestyle is because things get too complicated and stressful. I believe that being fit and healthy is not a quick fix, but rather something that should be sustained your entire life. As your personal trainer, I’m here to facilitate and guide you, but you have to put in the work.
