Jessica is one of our most favorite people ever. Hard-working, ever-positive, and thoughtful beyond belief; she embodies the things that make a community gym like Hyatt Training such a special place.
Name: Jessica Marlitt
Length of time with Hyatt Training and date when you started: I started in July 13, 2017, approaching two years.
Trainer: Trevor LaSarre
What were your goals when you started? Since I was a little girl, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and sports of all kinds. Being active has given me great joy physically and emotionally; it’s my “go to.” However, in the last few years, I realized I was injuring myself more frequently and, when I had to take time off, it was much harder for me to return to my favorite activities. So, after a severe case of plantars fasciitis in my left foot and ongoing pain and weakness in my right shoulder, I turned to Hyatt after a good word from a neighborhood acquaintance. My initial goals were simply to lose the pain, gain strength, and, hopefully, reduce the injuries of recent years. I hoped to return to rock climbing and playing volleyball pain-free.
What are your goals today? These past two years have given me so much to build on! Now my goals are to climb more regularly, return to running, and to gain even more strength and endurance. I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m optimistic.
What has been your biggest challenge? I think my biggest challenge has been fear: fear of injuring myself again, fear of failure. Trevor has been so good about keeping our workouts positive, and he reminds me of all the gains I have already made. He gives me confidence to believe in myself.
What have been your biggest areas of improvement? I feel my core strength has improved significantly and my breathing to support myself in whatever activity I’m doing. My upper body strength has also grown.
What is your favorite thing about Hyatt Training? I really appreciate the gym’s welcoming atmosphere, support, and camaraderie. Everyone is so friendly and ready to help. It is a lovely community I’m so happy to be a part of.
What is your favorite thing about your personal trainer? I love Trevor’s balance of detailed guidance and instruction, with workouts to challenge me, framed by an easy-going, positive attitude. His sense of humor and encouragement really boost my spirits, especially when I’m not feeling particularly strong or energetic. I always leave our workouts feeling better and with much gratitude.
What is your proudest achievement or biggest accomplishment since you began working with Hyatt Training: I’m nearly done with my second #HOPx10 Hour of Power Challenge! I honestly wasn’t sure I’d be able to complete it when I took on last year’s challenge for the first time.
What have you learned: Gyms can be fun. I’m not being flip when I write that because like many women my age, gyms were/are not places we think we belong. I’ve also learned the value of overall fitness and strength to support me as I age (which I hope to keep doing for many years to come…). More specifically, I have a better understanding of my body mechanics, breathing to strengthen my abdominals, and how to make adjustments to different exercises to fit my needs and avoid injury.
What advice would you give to other people starting on their fitness journey? Don’t let fear stop you. Hyatt Training personal trainers meet you where you are on your journey, and they will ensure your workouts are safe, measured, and effective. There is truly nothing to lose – except unwanted weight or pain – and so much to gain. And, believe it or not, you really can have fun with it all!
